AutoPot systems provide automatic, gravity-fed watering without requiring electricity, water pumps or conventional irrigation timers. Plants receive water and nutrients from below through the AQUAvalve, creating a responsive wet-and-dry cycle controlled by plant demand.
How Do AutoPot Watering Systems Work?
An AutoPot system uses gravity to carry water or nutrient solution from an elevated reservoir to the individual growing trays. No electric pump or mains water connection is required.
Inside each tray, the AQUAvalve opens and allows the water level to rise to approximately 20mm. It then closes and remains closed until the plants have used the available water. Only after the tray has emptied does the valve open again, producing a natural wet-and-dry watering cycle.
Because watering responds to plant demand rather than a fixed schedule, individual plants can take up different amounts of water as their needs change throughout their growth.
Choose the Right AutoPot System
AutoPot 1Pot Systems
The standard AutoPot 1Pot system uses an individual 15L pot, tray and AQUAvalve for each plant. Its compact footprint makes it a practical starting point for smaller growing areas, while the modular design allows additional pots to be connected when required.
AutoPot 1Pot XL Systems
AutoPot 1Pot XL systems use larger 25L pots, providing additional growing media capacity and more room for root development. Complete systems can be configured with different numbers of pots to suit both compact and larger installations.
AutoPot SmartPot XL Systems
SmartPot XL combines the AutoPot XL tray and AQUAvalve with a breathable 19L fabric pot. The fabric construction promotes air pruning around the root zone while retaining the automatic gravity-fed operation of a conventional AutoPot system.
AutoPot easy2grow Systems
The easy2grow system places two 8.5L pots inside one compact tray, both supplied by a single AQUAvalve. This makes efficient use of floor space and is particularly useful where multiple smaller pots are preferred.
AutoPot XXL Systems
AutoPot XXL systems provide a higher-capacity option for growers who require larger containers and more substantial root zones. Our current range includes an eight-pot XXL configuration for larger installations.
AutoPot easy2GO
The easy2GO kit allows a suitable flat-based gardening tray to be converted into an automatic gravity-fed watering system. Pots can be positioned directly inside the tray while a single AQUAvalve controls the water level.
This is a flexible option for holiday watering, greenhouses, indoor gardens and existing collections of potted plants. The tray must be sufficiently deep, completely level and connected to an appropriate reservoir.
What Growing Media Can Be Used in AutoPots?
AutoPot systems can be used with several free-draining growing media, including coco coir, soil, coco and clay-pebble blends, and other suitable substrate mixes. The correct choice depends on the plant, nutrient programme and level of moisture retention required.
Avoid heavily compacted media that may remain oversaturated. A free-draining blend with adequate air space around the roots will usually provide more reliable results in a bottom-fed system.

Setting Up an AutoPot System
Position the reservoir above the level of the AQUAvalves so that sufficient gravity pressure can be created. All growing trays should be placed on a firm and completely level surface before the system is switched on.
Newly transplanted plants should normally be watered from above while their roots establish in the pot. Once the roots have developed sufficiently, the reservoir tap can be opened and the plants can begin feeding through the AutoPot trays.
- Keep the reservoir, filters and pipework clean
- Check that every tray is level before filling the system
- Use the correct pipe and fittings for the system configuration
- Fit root-control discs or pot socks where specified
- Flush the supply lines periodically
- Use clean nutrients suitable for gravity-fed irrigation
- Check AQUAvalves regularly for debris or restricted movement
