Why Is pH Control Crucial in Hydroponic Systems?
Maintaining the correct pH level is a critical part of hydroponic gardening. Even if you're using high-quality grow lights, nutrients, and extraction systems, your plants won't thrive without proper pH regulation.
The pH level—short for “potential of hydrogen”—tells you how acidic or alkaline your nutrient solution is. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. Values below 7.0 are acidic, and those above are alkaline. For hydroponic systems, a slightly acidic range between 5.8 and 6.2 is ideal. Staying within this range ensures your plants can absorb all the essential nutrients they’re being fed.

What Happens If pH Is Off?
When pH levels are incorrect, your plants may experience nutrient lockout, where vital minerals like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium become inaccessible, even if they’re present in the solution. This can lead to deficiencies, stunted growth, and lower yields.
How to Test pH Levels in Hydroponics
Here are two effective ways to measure the pH of your nutrient solution:
✅ Liquid Testing Kits
Slightly more accurate than pH strips. Try the pH Test Kit.
✅ Digital Meters
For precision, opt for tools like the Bluelab pH Meter or the pH Pal Plus. These meters give instant digital readings and are highly reliable when properly maintained.
Maintenance Tips for Meters & Pens
Digital meters must be kept clean and regularly calibrated. Use pH Buffer 4 & 7 for this. Some pens must also remain moist between uses, so always read your product’s manual.
Tip: We offer a free in-store calibration service at all Holland Horticulture locations!
How to Adjust pH Levels
If your nutrient mix reads too high or too low, make adjustments using pH Up or Down solutions. Start with small amounts—just a few drops—and retest frequently.
Never mix pH Up and pH Down together, as this can cause a dangerous chemical reaction and ruin your nutrient solution.
Top Tip for pH Adjustments
If you're adding a Silicon Supplement, add it first. Silicon can raise pH by up to 2 points.
Final Thought: Monitor Daily
Daily pH checks take minutes but can save weeks of plant stress. A balanced pH leads to faster growth, bigger yields, and healthier plants. If you're unsure about which testing method or pH product is best, visit any of our four stores or contact us directly for expert advice.
